We continue our fascinating journey in search of an answer to the question “What other parts of the world have been changed by AI?”.

It turns out that confirmation of the fact of drowning is a difficult task, which sometimes requires not only a medical examination but also a mini-detective investigation, including the study of the circumstances of the discovery of the body. All this increases the entry threshold for doctors undertaking this task.

Therefore, researchers from Japan decided to take the first steps to simplify the lives of less experienced colleagues.

The researchers collected a small dataset of 300+ CT scans of drowned and non-drowned people and trained a binary classifier on AlexNet.

They received a profit in the form of AUC 0.95. At the same time, we observed that the metrics fell if they tried to save the “lucky one” in the intensive care unit.
